Main Street United Methodist Church

Main Street United Methodist Church began in 1852 as one of the Mississippi Coast’s earliest churches.  The church, which has been located in the heart of Bay Saint Louis’ Old Town for over 150 years, has had a long and colorful history.  It has grown and changed alongside the community, riding out Hurricane Camille and Hurricane Katrina. Main Street UMC continues to be active in the community as well as offer a space where we may all grow in love for God, God’s words, God’s people and God’s world.

We believe scripture is the inspired Word of God. It is our primary source and guide for faith, growth, and living life.

Loving God goes hand in hand with loving God’s people of every ethnicity and culture because we believe that every person is created in God’s image. In this diverse world, every person is infinitely valuable, lovable and redeemable; therefore our congregation seeks to be an intimate, multi-ethnic, multi-generational body of believers.

Our desire is to bring everyone to an experience of authentic Christian community.

Come as you are. Shorts and a T-shirt, or your Sunday best, it doesn’t matter. We just want to see your face and have you join us.

  • Rev. Dr. Terry Lynn Hilliard

    Senior Pastor

I am a native Texan and have called Mississippi my home since 2000. I Graduated from the University of Houston in 1995 with a degree in Occupational Technology and Industrial Studies. I attended Perkins School of Theology and graduated with an M.Div. from Memphis Theological Seminary in 2004 and a Doctor of Ministry in 2016. I have served United Methodist churches in both the Texas and Mississippi Conferences in the areas of children, youth, and family ministries; missions; and as pastor. Following Hurricane Katrina, I worked with UMCOR as the Western Regional Director and as chaplain of the Methodist Children’s Home of Mississippi. I am married to Larry, a UM pastor as well and we have 6 children and one grandson. In my spare time I spend time gardening, playing with our dogs, cycling, hiking, and cruising in our Jeep and my dad’s 1977 Toyota pickup.

  • Rev. Heather Hensarling

    Associate Pastor

I am a cradle Methodist who grew up in Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi. I took a circuitous route through college but finally graduated from Millsaps in 1993. After college I attended seminary at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO where I achieved an M.Div. in 1998. I received my first appointment in 1993 in rural Kansas and enjoyed almost ten years of ministry in the Kansas East Conference before returning to Mississippi in 2002. In my thirty years of ministry, I've pastored rural churches, urban churches, done campus ministry at a large university, was Pastor of Evangelism at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS, and was honored to serve as District Superintendent of the Seashore and Brookhaven Districts. I am thrilled to be back in Bay St. Louis and at Main Street once more! In my spare time I love to cook, fish, walk/hike, listen to a variety of music, and read.

  • Judy Guy

    Pianist

I have been the pianist for Main Street United Methodist Church since 1988. A native of North Dakota, I have lived on the Gulf Coast for 51 years. I graduated from Minot State College with a degree in education and enjoyed teaching for many years. I have three sons and six beautiful grandchildren. I grew up listening to my mother and her sisters playing music together and was drawn to music because of that. I started piano lessons at the age of 8. In addition to playing the piano, I enjoy painting, reading, hiking and a good game of pickleball. For me, playing the piano is a form of praying and keeps me connected to our Creator. It’s been a privilege to be in ministry at Main Street. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received over the years.

  • Polly Cameron

    Office Manager/Treasurer

Polly Cameron joined the Main Street United Methodist Church Staff as Office Administrator and Treasurer on August 14, 2023. Polly was formerly on the Rockmont Camp for Boys staff as their manager. Polly brought some 40 plus years of experience to MSUMC. She spent over 23 years of her professional career in the camping industry administratively providing a safe and challenging atmosphere of year-round learning for young people ages 5-16. She was responsible for the hiring, oversight, record management, accounts receivable and payable and training of staff and employees (ages 18-45) that were accountable for campers’ care. During the school year the camp ran an environmental program for children through the school systems throughout the southeast and Polly then wore the hat of on-site manager and summer camp administrator.

Polly was the “voice” of the organization, as she was the first person of contact, enrolling campers and answering parents’ questions. Be it going to an ACA conference, playing guitar at campfire, or marketing the experience to campers and counselors, Polly was ready to apply her life experience(s) and administrative aptitude for the support of the organization. Polly’s “mid-life” career of 16 years was spent working for Montreat Conference Center as the Annual Fund Director, Major Gifts Director, and Executive Assistant to the President. She "retired" in 2019, moved to coastal Mississippi, returned to WNC only later to return to the coast upon accepting the Office Admin/Treasurer position at Main Street UMC.
